Product Description
Grid Index is the first comprehensive visual lexicon of visual structures and systems.
It is an essential reference book for designers, visual artists, architects,
researchers and mathematicians. From the simplest grids made up entirely of
squares to the most complex irregular ones with infinitely unpredictable patterns
of growth, the book itself is a work of art.
All visual information and forms, whether illustration, graphic design, painting
or architecture are compromised of two dimensional grids and patterns, much
like the way that computer information is made up of zeroes and ones. Based

  1. I found this at a brick & mortar store where the price was high. Amazon had it for a more palatable price so I picked it up here. The disk it comes with contains all of the many grids shown in the book in vector form and you are free to use them as you please. I’ve used them for fine art vector based illustration work and love the tangents these elements have taken some of my projects on.

-Try rastorizing one of these grid files in Photoshop, then applying filters such as twirl or other distort functions to them. It creates amazing and original visual effects. The higher resolution you work in in Photoshop the better the end result is likely to be.

-See my uploaded file for an example of what I did with a grid, placed into an illustration and distorted.

-Try enlarging a grid and using it as a template for a page layout, for alignment of elements on the page. Rotate it slightly for added energy swiss-style.

The printed book may seem like overkill, but it’s indispensable as a quick easy way to locate a particular grid you’d like to use. Rating: 5 / 5

  2. An infuriatingly complex systemization of grids and graphs, produced in a very clean, almost scientific way. Excellent source for designers looking for pattern ideas, especially since there’s a free CD included with editable .svg and .pdf files! Be warned, though: staring at the pages for extended period of time might induce Magic Eye flashbacks. Rating: 5 / 5
